The Missouri Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling blocking a Trump-backed congressional map was a rare setback for Republicans in the national redistricting battle .

The new map would have given Republicans a 7-1 advantage in Missouri’s congressional delegation by dismantling the Kansas City-based district of Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver .

But the court ruled that the referendum petition — signed by more than 300,000 Missourians — was “legal, sufficient, and timely.” The new map “did not go into effect and will not go into effect unless and until approved by the voters” .

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway called it “a full-fledged constitutional crisis” and appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump lashed out on Truth Social: “This is a Dark Day for ‘Justice’ in Missouri!”

Virginia’s Question 3: A Blueprint for Voting Rights Restoration

Virginians are voting on Question 3, a constitutional amendment that would automatically restore voting rights to people with felony convictions upon completion of their sentences .

The context: Virginia’s felon disenfranchisement law traces back to the 1901 Constitutional Convention, where lawmakers explicitly designed it to disenfranchise Black voters. As state Sen. Carter Glass said at the time: “I would go to my grave under the oppression of self-condemnation if I failed here to assert the right and at any cost to secure the means of white supremacy” .

The impact: According to the Sentencing Project, about a quarter-million Virginians were unable to vote in 2024 after leaving prison .

The campaign: Portsmouth school board member Quniana Futrell spoke at the campaign kickoff about her mother, who died the day after her release from prison. “I never got my mother’s vote. That one vote would have been the one that meant everything to me — but Question Three fixes that.”
