Nas grew up in the Queensbridge housing projects in Long Island City, Queens — the son of jazz musician Olu Dara and postal worker Fannie Ann Jones . He dropped out of school after the eighth grade and began rapping under the name Kid Wave before being discovered by producer Large Professor.

His 1994 debut album, Illmatic, is widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time .
