Just days before the start of the fall semester, a shooting at Virginia State University left five people wounded and a campus community shaken. The incident occurred early Saturday morning outside a residence hall, prompting a temporary lockdown and a massive law enforcement response .
Police have arrested Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Virginia, who was found hiding in a dormitory closet . Harris is not a student at the university, nor were four of the five people injured . Authorities have obtained eight felony warrants against him, including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
What Happened
The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the university’s Quad Annexes, where campus police and Chesterfield County officers discovered five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories .
The victims ranged in age from 17 to 23 . One of the injured, a 20-year-old student, has been released from the hospital . A second victim remains in critical condition, while the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries .
The university initially reported that “multiple suspects” were involved in the shooting . However, after Harris’s arrest, police provided no additional information about whether other suspects are still being sought .
The Campus Response
The campus was placed on lockdown immediately following the shooting . The lockdown was lifted later Saturday after law enforcement determined there was no immediate threat to the campus community .
“We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community,” the university said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority” .
The campus had a large law enforcement presence Saturday morning, and the university informed students to monitor their email for additional safety measures and information about support services . The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation .
The Timing: A Return to Campus
The shooting came at a particularly vulnerable moment for the university community. According to the university’s website, residence halls opened for students a week ago, and classes are set to resume on Monday . Many students had just completed the university’s “New Trojans Experience” for incoming students .
Arthur Fridrich, the university’s former director of distance education, who lives near the campus and visits regularly, expressed heartbreak over the incident .
“To start a new year with this event is very tragic. It casts a shadow in the minds of all students, and for some it will be difficult to rid their minds of this term,” Fridrich said. “For those that were shot, my heart bleeds. I hope that they all mend and somehow do not let this event define their lives” .

Gov. Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, said via social media that she and her husband were “praying for a quick recovery for those who were shot this morning at Virginia State University, and our thoughts are with the VSU community.” She also thanked first responders and law enforcement .
Sen. Mark Warner, also a Democrat, said it was “devastating to see another Virginia campus harmed by gun violence” .
