October 3 is a significant date in hip-hop history — a day that produced two of the genre’s most distinctive voices and several albums that left lasting marks.

The Birthdays

Black Thought (born October 3, 1971) — The co-founder and lead MC of The Roots, Black Thought is widely regarded as one of the most skilled lyricists in hip-hop history. Born Tariq Luqmaan Trotter, he turned 55 this year. With The Roots, he became the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, bringing hip-hop into America’s living rooms every night. His longevity and consistency — spanning more than three decades — set a standard few match.

A$AP Rocky (born October 3, 1988) — Born Rakim Mayers in Harlem, Rocky emerged from the A$AP Mob to become a defining voice of 2010s hip-hop. He turned 38 this year. His debut album LONG.LIVE.A$AP (2013) topped the Billboard 200 and produced hits like “Fashion Killa” and “Wild for the Night.” His influence extends beyond music into fashion and culture, where he’s become a style icon.

The Albums (Released October 3)

1995: P.M. Dawn — *Jesus Wept— The third album from the genre-defying duo, blending R&B, jazz, and pop into something that defied easy categorization.

1995: WC and The Maad Circle — Curb Servin‘ — The West Coast group’s second album, released without Coolio, who had departed for a solo career.

2000: Jedi Mind Tricks — Violent by Design — The Philadelphia duo’s second album became an underground classic, praised for Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind’s dark, atmospheric production and the intense lyrical content of Vinnie Paz and Jus Allah. Despite never charting on Billboard, it sold 50,000 copies in its first week.

2006: Sadat X — Black October — The Brand Nubian member’s third solo album, featuring production from Diamond D, Da Beatminerz, and DJ Spinna.

Also on This Day

– 2005: Mariah Carey released “Get Your Number,” featuring Jermaine Dupri, from The Emancipation of Mimi.

– 2019: Doja Cat released “Bottom B***h,” the second single from her album Hot Pink.

Why It Matters

October 3 captures hip-hop’s range — from Black Thought’s lyrical precision to A$AP Rocky’s cultural fluidity, from P.M. Dawn’s genre-blurring experimentation to Jedi Mind Tricks’ underground intensity and Doja Cat’s pop-rap crossover. It’s a reminder that the genre has never been one thing.

Closing Question: Who is the most underrated lyricist in hip-hop history — and why?
