Rick Ross turned himself in to Miami Beach police early Thursday morning and was booked on felony battery by strangulation and misdemeanor battery charges stemming from an alleged August 28 incident involving a woman he was living with at his Star Island home .

The 50-year-old rapper, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts II, was released hours later after posting bond. Court records initially listed the bond at $5,000 cash, though some reports cite a combined $6,000 for both charges .

The Allegations: According to an arrest report, the woman told Miami Beach detectives that Ross accused her of cheating on him and struck her multiple times. She said Ross choked her with the collar of her shirt and slammed her into a wall. She was eventually able to leave the home and returned later — after Ross left — to collect her belongings .

The woman filed a police report on Tuesday, and Ross surrendered on Thursday morning .

The Defense: Ross’ attorney, Steve Sadow, said in a statement that his client is being wrongfully accused by an ex-girlfriend whose true motivations are unclear .

“The ex did not even file a police report until a month after the claimed incident allegedly took place,” Sadow said. “Mr. Roberts is innocent and has pled not guilty to the charges. He respectfully requests that his friends, fans and the general public not prejudge the situation and allow the judicial process to run its course” .

Speaking outside the jail after his release, Ross said: *“I’m totally innocent of these fabricated allegations made against me”* .

In Court: During a remote arraignment before Judge Mindy Glazer, Ross’ attorney Bradley Horenstein asked for expedited release, citing his client’s celebrity status and safety concerns while in custody. Glazer responded: *“I have no idea who you are, except somebody here in the court who’s going to be treated fairly just like everybody else here”* .

The judge issued a stay-away order prohibiting contact with the accuser. Ross is scheduled to return to court on October 22 .

Background: Ross pleaded no contest in 2017 to aggravated assault after he was accused of forcing a man into a guesthouse at his suburban-Atlanta mansion in 2015 and beating him with a handgun. Under a first-offender program in Georgia, the court issued an order exonerating Ross of guilt on that felony count .

Closing Question: What should happen when celebrity status collides with serious allegations — and does the public rush to judgment before the facts are in?
