After years of speculation and teases, the long-discussed album between 9th Wonder and Black Thought is nearly finished — and it’s just one verse away.

“I just need one more verse from him, and we’re done.”

No album title or release date has been announced. But the confirmation that the project is this close is significant for fans who have been waiting on the collaboration for years .

The Two Titans

The pairing brings together two pillars of hip-hop’s soulful, lyric-driven tradition.

9th Wonder — born Patrick Douthit in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — is a Grammy-winning producer, DJ, and academic. He rose to prominence as one-third of the North Carolina duo Little Brother, whose 2003 debut The Listening redefined the sound of Southern hip-hop. He went on to craft beats for Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Erykah Badu, and Mary J. Blige, and produced entire projects for Murs, Buckshot, and Jean Grae. Beyond music, he has been a professor at North Carolina Central University and Duke University, teaching the history and culture of hip-hop .

Black Thought — born Tariq Trotter in Philadelphia — is the co-founder, lead MC, and de facto frontman of The Roots, the legendary band that has served as the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2009. Beyond his work with The Roots, he has released acclaimed solo projects, including Streams of Thought volumes and The Upcycled Self. His lyrical precision and dense, literary style have made him one of the most respected MCs of his generation .

The Dream Collaboration

The album has been rumored for years. 9th Wonder has spoken openly about his desire to produce an entire Black Thought project, calling it a bucket-list collaboration. Black Thought, in turn, has consistently praised 9th Wonder’s production — his ability to build soulful, sample-driven soundscapes that leave space for lyricism.

The timing aligns with a remarkable creative run for Black Thought. In 2022, he teamed with producer Danger Mouse for the acclaimed Cheat Codes, which was named one of the best albums of the year. A sequel is reportedly in the works. He also has projects with Mach-Hommy in development.

And The Roots aren’t done either — the band has its own album, Endgame, on the horizon .

What This Means for Hip-Hop

A full album between 9th Wonder and Black Thought would be more than a fan-service project. It would be a statement about craft, legacy, and the kind of hip-hop that endures.

In an era dominated by streaming algorithms and viral moments, the collaboration represents something different: two artists at the top of their respective crafts, committed to making a body of work that honors the culture’s roots while pushing it forward.

For hip-hop fans, this is the collaboration they’ve been waiting decades for. And according to 9th Wonder, it’s closer than ever.
