This week at Bowie State University, Urban One launched ONE Yard: The HBCU Experience — a two-city tour blending digital culture, entrepreneurship, and community connection. The six-hour event drew approximately 400 students, alumni and staff to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center.

Beyond the music, food and entertainment, ONE Yard offered a glimpse of how HBCU communities can connect culture with opportunity. Students showcased new businesses, alumni shared financial and professional guidance, and entrepreneurs received feedback from potential mentors. The event provided an intergenerational space where HBCU students could build relationships and gain resources beyond the classroom.

The Bowie State gathering was the first stop on a two-campus tour designed to bring Urban One’s digital ONE Yard platform onto HBCU campuses. The tour concludes September 2 at Clark Atlanta University.

What Is ONE Yard?

ONE Yard is Urban One’s digital platform that connects culture, community, and commerce. The platform is designed to meet people where they are — on social media, streaming platforms, and in person — to build community around shared interests and aspirations.

The HBCU tour takes that digital platform into physical spaces, creating opportunities for students to:

  • Showcase new businesses and entrepreneurial ventures
  • Receive mentorship from alumni and industry professionals
  • Build relationships with potential investors and partners
  • Access resources beyond the classroom

HBCUs and the Digital Economy

Historically Black colleges and universities have long been engines of economic mobility for Black communities. Today, HBCUs are increasingly recognized as key players in building the tech talent pipeline and fostering entrepreneurship.

The numbers:

  • HBCUs produce 35% of Black STEM graduates nationwide
  • Black entrepreneurs are starting businesses at the fastest rate in decades
  • Digital platforms are creating new pathways for Black creators and founders

Events like ONE Yard bridge the gap between HBCU students and the digital economy, providing access to mentors, resources, and networks that can help them launch and grow businesses.

Why It Matters to Urban Communities

The ONE Yard tour represents an investment in HBCU communities at a critical moment. As the digital economy continues to grow, access to tech and entrepreneurship resources is essential for economic mobility.

For urban communities, events like ONE Yard are a blueprint for:

  • Bridging the digital divide by bringing tech and entrepreneurship resources directly to students
  • Building intergenerational wealth by connecting young people with mentors and investors
  • Creating pathways to ownership in the digital economy
